Tech Handbook: Computers Unplugged: The Benefits of Cordless/Wireless Peripherals Computers Unplugged: The Benefits of Cordless/Wireless Peripherals ================================================================================ jason on 10/09/2009 13:25:00 Most people don’t remember the days before the TV remote control, the cellphone, the remote keyring device to unlock your car, open the garage door or set the security alarm. In the world of computers, wireless networking is now a standard way to access broadband in the home. Wireless and cordless or remote-operated devices are desirable objects that will appeal to any gadget fan. Despite the advances in wireless technologies, the average home user will still face the nightmare of tangled wires and insufficient or inconveniently placed power points at some point. Cordless or wireless computer peripherals, typically working by means of infra-red, can be the solution even if they are slightly more expensive. As well as potential portability, cordless or wireless devices have another big thing going for them: they look good. If you want your office to look stylish, smart and uncluttered, nothing spoils the effect like metres of cabling. Cable organizers are all very well but they contain rather than solve the problem. As well as their aesthetic appeal, cordless computer peripherals can be a health and safety solution, as anyone who has ever tripped over wires and extension leads can testify. A variety of cordless computer peripherals are available today (and, in fact, some of them have been around for a while). Most of us could benefit from one or other of them and one of the items in the following list might make a great gift for the computer person who has everything. CORDLESS MOUSE AND KEYBOARD A cordless keyboard or mouse has a uniquely stylish appearance and appeal. Laptop and notebooks owners may love our machines for their compactness and portability. Not all of us are as keen on touchpad operation and the standard keyboard. Cordless mice and keyboards are a space-saving solution and easy to pack up and take with you if you’re on the move. CORDLESS WEBCAM Not vital perhaps, but a cordless webcam can be convenient. If you need to show someone something that’s on the other side of the room you don’t have to fetch it, or move the laptop plus webcam to capture it. CORDLESS HEADPHONES AND MICROPHONES If you make regular use of Skype or other online telecommunication methods, you may have a wired headset. A cordless headset and/or microphone makes it a more comfortable experience, without the feeling of being plugged into the computer. CORDLESS COMPUTER SPEAKERS You don’t have to have them right by on your desk. As long as they are within communication range you can put them out of the way. Flexibility in where you position them helps you get the best sound quality. CORDLESS/WIRELESS PRINTERS As well as the visual advantages of cordlessness, wireless printers allow multiple users to print, from different locations. Contemporary models which print, scan and have a built-in cordless phone and fax can be the ultimate office accessory, cutting cabling to a bare minimum. WIRELESS GAMES CONTROLLERS AND JOYSTICKS With a wireless games controller or joystick you have more freedom to move around and fewer concerns about kids tripping over the cables or pulling things over on top of themselves or others. Of course wireless and cordless gadgets aren’t always perfect. There may be slightly impaired functionality or delayed response with some items. The one advantage of wires is that it’s hard to lose the device on the end of it, whereas a cordless mouse can go walkabout. You may be able to live without cordless gadgets but if you hate wires and love stylish design then some of these peripherals might be worth putting on your shopping list or wish list.
