Tech Handbook: A Guide to installation and use of Avira® AntiVir Personal Edition A Guide to installation and use of Avira® AntiVir Personal Edition ================================================================================ Go The Power on 06/04/2009 18:35:00 A Guide to installation and use of Avira(R) AntiVir Personal Edition. by GothePower Avira(R) AntiVir Personal Edition is a freeware program designed to give a computer protection from viruses, including real-time protection. Avira(R) AntiVir also gives protection against Viruses; Worms; Trojans; Dialers and Phising; it detects and deletes Rootkits as well. Further information is available at the Avira(R) Website. The Avira(R) Premium Security Suite program, has everything that the freeware version has. In addition, it includes a Firewall; Protection against Spyware and Adware; protection against Email Viruses, as well as Antispam protection. This product version costs from (approximately), €39.95 Euro/ £27.20/ $USD47.21/ $AUD63.30 for a One Year Licence. Further information and purchasing options are available from, Avira(R) Premium Security Suite. How to Download Avira(R) AntiVir Personal Edition. Avira(R) Antivir Personal Edition downloads are available from the Avira(R) Website. Alternatively, these direct links are available: Windows 2000, XP and Vista 32 bit: Download [17mb] Windows 98/ME: Download [17mb] Linux / FreeBSD / Solaris Download[40mb]. Please Note: Avira(R) is also available for use with Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris; however, installation instructions for these, are not covered in this guide. Right click the required version, and Save it to the Desktop for ease of access. Installation When the download is complete; double click the Desktop Icon to start the installation. Figure 1 will appear as illustrated. Figure 1 Click Accept to continue the installation. The Avira(R) program automatically extracts the necessary files (by default) to a temporary directory, for installation, as shown in Figure 2. Click Install to continue the process. Figure 2 Figure 3 Click Next to continue the installation. Figure 4 Read the text; then, click Next. Please read the Terms and Conditions. Tick the box selected as illustrated, in Figure 5. Click Next to continue. Figure 5 It is a Condition of Use that Avira(R) AntiVir Personal Edition will not be used for Commercial or Business purposes. Avira(R) AntVir Personal Edition may only be used for private use. Figure 6 Important Note: This Condition must be agreed to for the installation to continue. Click Next to continue. Avira(R) Antivir requires a serial number to operate properly. It is recommended to tick the box to Generate a random Serial Number, then click Next, as highlighted in Figure 7. Figure 7 Figure 8 shows the options for Installation. Unless there is any specific reason to do otherwise, it is recommended to allow the default Complete Installation to proceed. Figure 8 Click Next for the installation to proceed. Figure 9 Please be patient while the program installs. This could take several minutes depending on the speed of the computer. Figure 10 Avira(R) Antivir is now installed! Please reboot the computer. Running the Avira Antvir(R) program Once the installation is complete, Avira(R)Antivir places an icon on your desktop, similar to the illustration of Figure 11. Figure 11 Double click the Icon to launch Avira(R) Antivir. Updating the Program When the Avira(R) Anitvir program opens, the default screen (Figure 12) is shown. Establish an Internet connection, then select Start Update, so the program can update its virus database definitions. Figure 12 Please Note: When looking next to Personal Edition Classic License Valid until dd/mm/yyyy is shown. The license should automatically update 4 weeks before the Expiry Date, as shown in Figure 13 below. To view the Expiry Date, click the plus (+) sign, as seen in the blue square. Figure 13 In the event of an update error, saying, "Invalid License Key": Right click Here and choose Save Target As… or Save link as.., save it to the Desktop. *Go to the Desktop, locate the hbedv.key file. *Right click the file, and select 'Cut'. *Navigate to C:Program Files AntiVir Personal Edition Classic, double click the folder to open it. *Right click blank open area within that folder, then select 'Paste'. Figure 14 shows the Avira(R) Antivir during the definition update process. Figure 14 Scanning with Avira(R) AntiVir Select the required areas on the computer to be scanned. Figure 15 The Scanning Options available are: Local Drives: This profile scans all local drives (Hard Disks, Floppy Disk Drives, CD-ROM Drives, USB Sticks, etc) on the system for viruses or unwanted programs. Local Hard Disks: This profile scans all local hard disks on your system for viruses or unwanted programs. Removable Drives: This profile scans all Removable Drives (Floppy Disk Drives, CD-ROM drives, USB sticks, etc) on the system for viruses or unwanted programs. Windows(R) System Directory: The Windows(R) System Directory of the computer is scanned for viruses or unwanted programs. My Documents: The "My Documents" Folder on the system is scanned for viruses or unwanted programs. Active processes: All current processes are scanned for viruses or unwanted programs. Rootkit Search: The computer is scanned for active rootkits. Manual Selection: This option allows the user to select the files or folders to scan. Please Note:It is recommended that this option only be used by Advanced Users. Once the preferred option is selected, click the Magnifying Glass as illustrated in Figure 16. Figure 16 Figure 17 shows the Avira(R) AntiVir active scan window. Figure 17 Figure 18 displays the completed scan window with the results of the scan. This example illustrates a 'clean' computer. Figure 18 Please Note: Scanning usually takes more time than 1:02 minutes to complete. For the purpose of this article only the "My Documents" Folder was selected. The duration time needed will depend entirely upon the Option selected, and the size of the Hard Disc Drives to be scanned. What to do when Infections are found whilst scanning Figure 19 is an example of what it would look like if an infection is found whilst scanning. The recommended option is to Click Quarantine, then Apply Selection to the following detections, then click Ok. (As shown in the red rectangles) Figure 19 At the completion of the scan, the Avira(R) AntiVir program may request that the system be immediately rebooted. In this instance, click OK and allow a reboot to occur, as illustrated in Figure 20. Figure 20 What to do whilst browsing or downloading files and a 'Pop up Alert' appears Figure 21 shows a typical pop up alert. Figure 21 If a Pop up Alert appears, simply select Quarantine then Ok. Please Note: This procedure may have to be repeated a few times. How to Configure Settings for Automatic 'Quarantine' Firstly, open the Avira(R) Antivir using the Desktop Icon, then, Double click Configuration, as shown in the red box in Figure 22. Figure 22 Next, select Expert Mode, (This may be found at the top Left of the Scan Panel) then, double click Scan, as indicated by the Blue arrow, shown in Figure 23. Figure 23 The 'Action for concerning file' Panel is now opened, as shown in Figure 24. It is recommended to select Automatic. Click on the drop arrow for 'Primary Action', select Repair. Next, select Secondary Action, then, Quarantine, and click OK. Figure 24 That's all there is to the Avira(R) AntiVir program. Enjoy Safe Computing!
