i tried making some of these symbols and it doesnt work. does it make a difference if your using a lap top?

Yes it does matter if you are using a laptop. You will have to have your numlock turned on because you have to use the number pad (not the numbers along the top of the keyboard).

You can get all the same symbols by going into your Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > and choose Character Map
