No matter where you work and what you do, you’re absolutely going to have an assortment of used and useless toner cartridges laying about. While most people just throw them out, studies have shown that this not only isn’t environmentally friendly, but can be harmful to the environment as well. These plastic toner cartridges can not only never biodegrade, but will also leak harmful chemicals into the ground.
Luckily, there’s another way. Not only can you help the environment, but you can help out a great cause as well! Many organizations are now being set up that allow people to donate their used toner and ink cartridges to charity, acting as the middleman, and raising money to donate to these worthy causes!
Funding Factory (http://www.fundingfactory.com), takes donations of cartridges and other recyclable electronics and uses the proceeds to go to a variety of registered charities. You can register your business as a Business Supporter, and then select your charity from those already signed up to accept donations. Then, you’ll be given a list of recyclable items you can send to Funding Factory for them to process. If, at any point, you send in an item they can not turn into funding for your charity of choice it will be disposed of safely and cleanly.
Funding Factory will send you free shipping labels, along with promotional materials to get your company prepared and ready to start recycling. Approximately 85 percent of all toner cartridges are eligible for recycling, including those by HP, Canon, and Lexmark.
If you live in the Uk, Cartridges 4 Charity (http://www.cartridges4charity.co.uk/) also allows you to turn those old cartridges in for charity fund raising. While the amount of charities listed is far smaller than those in the States, it appears that more of a net profit goes towards the charities themselves (100 percent). Cartridges 4 Charity works in the same was as Funding Factory: you check the website for the list of compatible cartridges (ink, toner, and laser are all applicable) and send them to Cartridges 4 Charity. While they do not provide bags for you to place your cartridges in, postage is free and you can pick up free labels through the freepost website. They also take a limited number of mobile phones as well for recycling and fund raising purposes, and once again you can check their site for which models are applicable.
Once you send in the cartridges, they will recycle them, and 100 percent of the net profit will go to one of their three participating charities. Cruse Bereavement Care, located in Scotland, is dedicated to assisting those going through a dramatic loss in their life through a network of volunteers. SeeAbility is an organization that helps those with visual impairments and have additional disabilities reach their full potential, through both community support and networking. Finally, Cartridges 4 Cash will donate funds to Cardiac Risk in the Young. Cardiac Risk in the Young, or CRY, offers vital support and medical research for the small yet dramatically effected demographic of children who suffer with life-threatening cardiac problems.
So, the next time you’re looking to replace and throw out your old cartridge, or are ordering new ones for your boss at work, please think about those less fortunate who rely on the good works of charity to get them through their lives. It costs you nothing, helps the environment, keeps our landfills empty and our ground soil safe, and you’ll be doing a good deed for many who absolutely need it.
