How to Speed Up FireFox

A great way to optimize Firefox is to edit the program manually to tell it to use certain values more efficiently.

In this guide, I am going to explain how you can speed up your Firefox browser without having to even leave your seat.

Firstly, open a New Tab by pressing CTRL + T or by going to File > New Tab to allow you to switch quickly between the configuration and this guide.

Once the New Tab has opened, we need to enter the following text into the address bar to take us to the configuration editor. Copy the bold text and paste in in the empty tab now.

about:config Now press enter.

This should return to you a long list of values, but we are only interested in a few of them.

Firstly either use the Filter bar along the top or scroll down to these entries.

  • network.http.pipelining
  • network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
  • network.http.proxy.pipelining

*If you use the Filter bar, a really easy method to see all the entries is to enter the text network.http. which all the entries begin which, thus making it far easier to find the correct ones.

Now we need to change the values of these entries.

* To change a value, Double-Click it until it turns to the correct one you need.

network.http.pipelining

Change this value from False to True.

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Change this value to something such as 25-30. This means it will make requests more often, thus speeding up browsing.

network.http.proxy.pipelining

Change this value from False to True.

Finally,

Right-Click anywhere and go to New > Integer . In the pop-up box, enter the following information in the bold text:

nglayout.initialpaint.delay

Set this value to 0 (zero). This value depicts how long it should wait before it sends an request the the web-page server to receive information.

After you have completed all these steps, you should notice a noticeable change in the speed your browser operates.

Firefox Preloader

We can also use a Firefox Preloader to greatly reduce the start time that Firefox takes to open. This download can be found here.

Once this page has loaded, please choose either the .exe or .zip download file. I recommend the .exe.

The download window should now pop-up and you should click Save File to save the file onto your computer. Once it has finished downloading, Double Click the newly downloaded .exe file.

Once the installation window appears, click Next to take you to the next stage.

Accept the license agreement making sure you understand the terms and click Next.

Choose the default install directory or change it to tell XP where you want it to install the program.

Choose full installation and Click Next

Choose a suitable name as to what you would like the program to show under the Start Menu.

Make sure that Launch Firefox Preloader at Windows Startup is checked.

Review the install settings and if satisfactory, click the Install button to install the program to your PC.

We dont need to view the ReadMe file, unless you wish to. So untick this option but make sure to leave Launch Firefox Preloader is checked.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed Firefox Preloader. You should now notice a quicker opening of the program.

Please note that the more add-ons that you have installed to Firefox, the longer that the program will take to load up initially.
