An Installation guide for IE-Spyad™

IE-Spyad™ is a freeware utility that places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the Internet Explorer Restricted List.

Tip: Throughout this tutorial there are coloured links for downloading the utilities required.
Please click the
"Blue" underlined links to be re-directed to the download sites.

This program severely impairs attempts to infect a computer's system.
Please note: IE-Spyad™ is not an ad blocker.
It will not block standard banner ads in Internet Explorer.

What this Restricted Sites List of known advertisers and crapware pushers will do is:

  • Stop unwanted crapware from being installed unknowningly via "drive-by-downloads".
  • Prevent the hijacking of your home page and other key Internet Explorer settings.
  • Shut down ActiveX, Java, and scripting, all of which can be employed to push obnoxious advertising on a computer, and compromise privacy and security.
  • Block cookies, which can be used to monitor and track a user's
    travels around the Internet.
  • Combat obnoxious script-based popups, that clutter the screen and force unwanted advertising on a system.

A self-extracting version of IE-Spyad™ is available for download here.

To use the IE-Spyad™ for ZonedOut "Restricted sites" lists it is essential that ZonedOut® by funkytoad, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility, is downloaded too.

Tip: Be sure to "save" all downloads to the Desktop (or another location) rather than selecting the 'run' option.

Important Note: Any previous versions of IE-Spyad™ must be uninstalled before continuing with the installation!!

When downloaded, double click the IE-SPYAD™ Icon that appears on the Desktop.
Figure 1 will appear, as shown...

Click the Unzip button; the files will (by default) be extracted to C:iespyad_zo.

If no previous version of IE-Spyad™ is installed, please go to Section 2.

Section 1 - Uninstalling Older Versions of IE-Spyad™
  • Note: Custom Sites Lists

Should a Custom Restricted Sites List been created previously, it will need to rebuilt after completing this installation of IE-Spyad for ZonedOut.

  • Note: IE-SPYAD2™

    ZonedOut® will not uninstall IE-SPYAD2™.
To uninstall IE-SPYAD2™, please use the uninstaller that came with IE-SPYAD2™.

To correctly uninstall previous versions of IE-Spyad™, use the ZonedOut® utility.

Double click ZonedOut.exe; allow the program to open; then, Select Menu > Remove Sites > Remove All, as shown in Figure 2.

Congratulations! That's all there is to the installation of IE-Spyad™! using ZonedOut®!!

Section 3 - Installing Optional protections.

There are other imports from within the ie-spyad_zo folder; however, these are a matter of personal choice for the user.
Please make time to review the readme file.

Tip: The installation of these optional components is the same as for the installing of the ie-ads.txt file.

The optional components are: adults.txt and IE-NFE.txt files.

Briefly, adults.txt places many adult sites into the Restricted Zones.

The IE-NFE.txt or Not For Everyone file, places additional sites into the Restricted Zones.
Some users may want these further restricted enhancements; some may not.
It is recommended to review the "readme file" to make a decision.

Please Note: To fully implement these protections, some editing of the IE-NFE.txt file needs to take place. Lines with the double-asterisks and space (**) at the beginning will not be loaded by default.

Section 4 - Updating IE-Spyad™ for ZonedOut®.

After the initial installation, it is recommended to visit the IE-Spyad™ site monthly, to check for any possible updates.

To update IE-Spyad™ for ZonedOut®, simply download the self-extracting executable version of IE-Spyad™ once again, and repeat the procedures for uninstalling old versions, and installing new versions. At this time, only the ie-ads.txt and IE-NFE.txt files are updated.
